Brothers Bowser and Rufus were surrendered to the SPCA Gatineau as seniors in late 2023. We estimate they are just over 2 years old Unfortunately, they have a host of behavioral and health issues requiring some special care.
Bowser is very defensive and wary of humans and will bite to draw blood. He also has a fatty deposit that is not growing or bothering him in his right upper torso. The Rescue is keeping a close eye on it. Rufus is much sweeter and kinder and seems to enjoy the occasional ...

Sydney and Gaia
Update: May 15, 2024. Unfortunately Sydney very rapidly developed symptoms of congestive heart failure. While she initially responded very well to lasiks + antibiotics, over the May long weekend, she had a sudden and severe decline. The foster, along with the rescue and our vet made the call to say goodbye to Sydney.
Sydney and Gaia are estimated to be born some time in October of 2022 making them approximately 1 year 3 months old. Both of them were purchased from Pet Circus in downtown Ottaw...

Ginny (sponsor me!)
Update: Nov. 2, 2023
Unfortunately Bear developed both PT and a mammary tumor right by her groin. Due to these two issues, we attempted to first control the PT symptoms to keep her comfortable, knowing that her time would be limited. After two weeks with no improvement on cabergoline and Bear losing her appetite and mobility, we had to make the difficult decision to have her euthanized.
Ginny is now living with her foster mome's rat, Strawberry. She continues to have chronic respiratory issu...

Onyx & Diamond
These two boys are estimated to be born in late November of early December of 2022. They were part of two oops litters from when a young man purchased rats from someone on Kijiji and the girls turned out to be pregnant.
Thankfully, he has been doing his best to take care care of them and to handle them every day. Both are extremely curious and friendly, but will take a bit of time to warm up to new people and things.
All they need now, is a loving forever home that will give them tons of a...

Ebby & Bob (neutered)
*** In order to adopt, you must be an existing client of a vet clinic that sees rats or have been accepted as a new client at a clinic that sees rats ***
Ebby and Bob are an odd couple for sure.
Ebby was actually born at the rescue on Aug. 30, 2020. Her mother was a domesticated rat who was dumped outside and her father was a wild rat. This means Ebby is half-wild. She's not a big fan of being held, although she will tolerate it if it means play time. And she's not a big fan of being pet....

Delilah & Penelope (medical hold)
Update Nov. 23, 2021: Penelope has developed a small mammary tumor in her left armpit area. Her surgery is scheduled for Dec. 6, 2021
Meet sweet, calm ladies Delilah and Penelope. As you can see, the two of them are tightly bonded. We estimate that they are 1.5 years old and were surrendered to the SPCA in Gatineau with no reason stated.
Both are healthy, in good condition and definitely seem to have come from a home where they were handled or at least enjoyed some human interaction and en...

Sandy (sponsor me/special needs)
Sandy came to the Rescue in late May of 2020.
She was found in a backyard after her and at least 1 other rat was dumped outside. For weeks, a kind man tried to trap them, but despite his best efforts, they could not be caught. After several weeks, the other rat suddenly disappeared and only Sandy was left. Now extremely skinny and hungry, she finally allowed herself to be trapped.
Unfortunately the trauma of what she had been through made Sandy extremely fearful, to the point of biting. Sh...

Teddy (sponsor me!)
Teddy was surrendered to the SPCA in Gatineau along with his 2 brothers in 2019 estimated at 1 year old. Unfortunately, by beginning of 2021, Teddy had lost his brothers Sampson (eye tumor) and Frankie (stroke), and himself had a tumor removed from his leg.
After spending a few months living with 2 baby boys, unfortunately he again had to be separated when one of the babies became too aggressive for elderly Teddy.
Thankfully, Teddy seems to be adjusting well to bachelor life. At the ripe o...

Xavier-Lee, Francis & Charles (special needs)
Meet this trio of of older boys, Xavier-Lee, Francis & Charles.
They were unfortunately neglected for most of their life and surrendered to the Rescue with some health issues.
Of the three Xavier-Lee is the oldest at approximately 2 years old, but he also happens to be the healthiest. His only ailment is some natural balding due to being a Rex rat.
Both Francis and Charles are estimated to be about 1 year old and both suffer from respiratory infections. Thankfully, they are responding w...

Update: August 12, 2022. Deny has a skin infection and is slowly showing signs of improvement after several weeks of treatment. Unfortunately, she has now also developed three tumors: one in her groin and two more on her right hip. Due to her age and existing skin condition, she is not a candidate for surgery. She currently require...

Update: June 14th, 2021. Unfortunately, Mei's respiratory infection has returned and will likely require treatment for the rest of her life. Additionally, Menma is now exhibiting symptoms of Pituitary Tumor. She will also undergo treatment with cabergoline.
Don't let their age fool you. At 1.5 years old, Menma and Mei are both still so incredibly full of beans. They run, they climb, they explore, they do everything a young rat would want to do with boundless amounts of energy. Their foster mo...

Bryon & Percy (special needs)
A word from their foster family:
"Bryon & Percy are really good boys. They use their litter box almost all the time and are very sweet.
They still don't like to be picked up, and out times are often spent in one of the boxes, too shy to come out, but they don't run away at loud sounds, or us, and they love nibbling our fingernails and playing hide and seek."
Bryon & Percy were surrendered to the Rescue with severe respiratory infections. After months of treatment with antibiotics, both...

Update Jan. 28, 2021. Unfortunately, Cora had to be euthanized at the emergency vet early Thursday morning due to respiratory related complications. Cora had been battling chronic respiratory infections for well over a year. RIP little one.
Cora and Rowena are actually related. Cora was born Oct. 31, 2018, while Rowena was likely born 6 months earlier and was in fact Cora's grandmother. Both girls were taken from a backyard breeder who was primarily breeding snake food.

Finally, when Amy started to show severe symptoms, including lack of appetite, lethargy and gasping, her previous owner reached out to the Rescue, asking us to save her...

Daisy (sponsor me!)
Elderly Daisy was brought to the Rescue along with her sister almost 2 and half years ago.
They have been with the Rescue ever since and were never even put up for adoption. The reason was because both girls are half wild and mostly feral. Their mother was dumped in a warehouse and was impregnated by wild rats. Daisy and her sister were born in the wild and raised in the wild.
Unfortuantely, the warehouse manager decided to call in an exterminator, and so with the help of a kind woman, we t...

Sweet elderly Ellie was surrendered to the rescue covered in lice, with a respiratory infection and initial symptoms of PT (pituitary tumor). We were honestly not even sure if little old Ellie would make it. Miraculously, with the love and care of her foster, plus the right antibioitcs and cabergoline to treat her PT symptoms, Ellie is almost completely back to being a normal rat.
She's a little cuddlier than most, and she does sleep a lot, but you would never know that just a few weeks ago, ...
